The crew list; for 23 years of diving aboard the WAHOO retired.
Captain Janet Bieser, Woman Hall of Fame member Maggie Owens, started diving in 1992. Originally a tropical and vacation
diver only, northeast wreck diving became her passion when she found out about it by watching Dan Berg's "Dive Wreck Valley" cable TV program. She
has been diving here every weekend during dive season since 1996 and joined
the Wahoo crew in the spring of 1999. She is currently NAUI and TDI
Technical Nitrox certified, and is working on her TriMix certification. In
addition, she received her GUE Cave 1 certification in March, 1999 and
plans to take the GUE Cave 2 class (equivalent of NSS or NACD Full Cave) in
November, 1999. Maggie's favorite wrecks are the San Diego, Oregon and
Stolt Dagali. She enjoys artifact hunting, wreck exploration, and just
plain sightseeing, and has been known to bring up a lobster every now and |

Sally Wahrmann Woman Hall of Fame member Sally has been a crew member of Wahoo since she was built 1980, Sally was the first cook on our Andrea Doria expeditions and it lasted 7 years. Sally would cook breakfast do the dishes and then make a dive come back prepare lunch cleanup and start dinner make her second dive and after getting on deck would serve dinner clean up sleep a couple of hours and back to cooking breakfast again. Sally had over 60 dives before 1988. Sally dove twin 72 steel tanks setup with independent regulators and has recovered many artifacts and dishes from Peter Gimbel hole. Joel D. Silverstein holds an enviable record of technical diving, diver training, and international publishing experience. His SUB AQUA magazine was one of the main voices in the wreck and technical diving industry from 1991 to 1996. He has created several significant training programs, including What Recreational Divers Can Learn from Technical Divers (with DUI) and a decompression sickness training program Bends is Not a Dirty Word. Joel has served on dive training and accident prevention boards and panels as organizer, participant, and keynote speaker. He has been instrumental in the development of safety and operational procedures for technical diving. In response to a growing need for a diver- friendly treatment center in the NY/NJ/CT area he put together a two-year plan with International Underwater Contractors to operate the Hyperbaric facility on City Island. Until hospital facilities took over this task the City Island Chamber became one of the busiest and most effective diver treatment facilities. He received the SSI Platinum Pro 5000 Award, the Outstanding Service Award from both Beneath the Sea and the Eastern Dive Boat Association, the 1996 NAUI Outstanding Service Award, and is listed in the Who's Who of Diving. Mr. Silverstein also hosts a weekly interactive discussion on technical diving in the AOL Scuba Forum. He recently co-authored a new text with Dr. RW Hamilton entitled: NAUI Nitrox: A Guide to Diving With Oxygen Enriched Air. He has been a crew member of the R/V Wahoo since 1991. Captain Kathy Weydig, Woman Hall of Fame member Currently serves on the NAUI Technical Advisory Board. She is a Course Director for NAUI, an Instructor Trainer for DAN, National Safety Council and TDI. Kathy, served as the Director of Training of the City Island Hyperbaric Chamber and is a Certified Hyperbaric Technologist, a Diving Medical Technician and an EMT. She was Chairman of the 1994 NAUI Elections Committee and was the recipient of the NAUI Scholarship Award, NAUI Outstanding Service Award and the NAUI Continuing Services Award. She holds a USCG Inland Master Captains License, is a crew member of the Research Vessel Wahoo and a member of the US Deep Wreck Diving Team. She is president and owner of two companies, Photographic Communications, and Scuba Training + Travel Company, Inc. presently employed by Bridgeport Ct. as a Harbor Master. |

Rich Stinchcomb was certified in 1987.
Quickly joined a local dive club and that helped launch him into
more advanced diving. He is TDI Nitrox and DAN Oxygen Provider certified
and plans to begin the GUE Technical Diver program during the first quarter of
2001. In 1995 he joined the crew of the Wahoo. Favorite wrecks are
the USS San Diego, Oregon, and U-853. Artifact collecting is his favorite
activity while diving. He is employed by Computer Science Corporation
working under contract at Sikorsky Aircraft as a UNIX Systems Analyst. |

Shelley Lee Johnson Kleinschuster Certified in 1987, diving turned serious in 1993 when Shelley bought her first drysuit and committed to crewing on wreck diving charters every weekend of the NE Atlantic seasons. Having joined the Wahoo crew in 1998, she has nearly 1,000 dives under her BC with certifications including PADI Divemaster, IANTD + NAUI Tech Tri-Mix and NSS Cavern/Cave. Shelley's commitment to the lifestyle comes from a relentless lust for adventure and a genuine love of the ocean. A quest for personal best supported by worthy mentors keeps Shelley on track. Favorite travel destinations are the wrecks of Truk Lagoon in Micronesia and the Florida cave systems. Memorable Wahoo expeditions include the Andrea Doria, Coimbra and Texas Tower but nothing beats a great day with friends on the H.M.S. Oregon. |

Captain Kirby
Kurkomelis is
a P.A.D.I (Professional Association of Diving Instructors) Master Instructor.
He has specialties in Wreck Diving, Deep Diving, Search and Recovery, Night
Diving, Underwater Navigation, Cold Water Diving, medic First Aid, Nitrox and
Oxygen Administration, Underwater Naturalist, along with Dry Suit Diving and
Underwater Photography. Kirby has a United States Coast Guard License (Merchant
Marine Officer), with a bachelor's degree in marine science. Kirby is presently
teaching adult education scuba classes at three local Universities, along with
training local municipality's scuba and rescue operations. Kirby’s research
projects in the past have dealt with Pollution in the "New York
Bite", study of horseshoe crabs on the East Coast and many more projects.
Kirby was the managing editor of the Sub Aqua Journal with his column
entitled Kirby's Corner. |
